What is faille?

Faille is a plain weave fabric in which the weft is thicker than the warp and thus exhibits ribbing. It has a matte finish but is very durable. Black faille is most common, but other colors of faille are also available. Its thick texture is suitable for outerwear, children's clothing fabrics, and decorative cloth; it can also be used for embroidered base cloth, embroidered shoes, etc.

Grosgrain cotton fabric with horizontal ribbing. It is named after the cloth surface is as bright as satin. Its thick texture is suitable for outerwear, children's clothing fabrics, and decorative cloth; it can also be used for embroidered base cloth, embroidered shoes, etc. Faille is generally made of the warp-heavy flat organization or dobby weave, with 13.9 (42-inch) double-strand thread for warp and 27.8 (21-inch) 3-strand thread for weft weaving. Due to the thick weft thread, the cloth surface has obvious horizontal stripes. Grey fabrics need to be bleached, mercerized, dyed, printed, and finished. For example, using No. 9.7 double-strand (60 inch/2) and No. 27.8 double-strand (21 inch/2) combed singe yarn for warp and weft, it is called four faille (or silk faille), the finished product is tighter, and the cloth The surface is smoother, but the warp is easy to break. This disadvantage can be avoided by using polyester-cotton blended yarns.

Faille can be woven from various materials such as silk, wool, nylon, etc., and there is also faille woven from various secondary materials. It has been widely used in the weaving of various western clothes since the 17th century.

Uses of faille

In terms of clothing, wide-faille ribbons were used as waist decorations for women's dresses.

In men's clothing, faille is often used for shirt necklines, where it can often be seen.

There are also small items including hats and hair accessories such as bobby pins.

Then again, the faille ribbon is also popular as a wrapping material and can be used for the handles of gift paper bags.
